Serena’s Song Retired With Money Record, Losing Streak

Serena’s Song, who became thoroughbred racing’s all-time leading female money earner when second in last Saturday’s Churchill Downs Distaff, has been retired.

Owners Bob and Beverly Lewis and trainer Wayne Lukas made the decision Wednesday morning.

“She’s done everything she can possibly do. There are no more worlds to conquer. The only thing left is to put that plaque on the wall at Saratoga,” said Lukas, in reference to Serena’s Song’s eventual induction into racing’s Hall of Fame.

Despite being beaten in her final seven starts, Serena’s Song finished with 18 victories, 11 of them Grade I’s, in 38 starts. She was also second 10 times and third three times. She finished with $3,283,388 in earnings, about $20,000 more than Dance Smartly.
