Fund-Raising Probe Request Rejected

A citizen watchdog group’s request for an independent counsel to investigate Democratic and Republican fund-raising in the 1996 presidential campaigns has been rejected by Atty. Gen. Janet Reno. In turning down the Common Cause request, the Justice Department said the group’s allegations were not specific enough and did not name or link campaign officials covered under the independent counsel law to warrant seeking a special prosecutor.
