Crespi Posts Admirable Record Against Top Competition
- Share via
As the parent of two former Crespi High football players, I deeply resented your reference to Crespi as one of the “bottom feeders” of the Del Rey League.
Although it is true Bishop Amat and Loyola tend to remain at the top of the league, Crespi has had an admirable record at this level.
Last season marked the first since 1985 that Crespi did not qualify for the playoffs.
In 1993, Crespi reached the Division I semifinals where it narrowly lost to eventual champion Eisenhower, 7-3. Eisenhower was the No. 1-ranked team in the country.
Since 1988, Crespi has finished among the top three in its league six times, has won the Division I championship once and reached the semifinals twice.
Instead of deriding Crespi because it has not recently won a title in the toughest competition in California (and maybe the country), The Times should focus on the timidity displayed by the other Valley schools that refuse to step up to the top level.
My kids took their lumps at this level, but I am extremely proud of them; much more so than if they had won a “championship” in Division III.
