Permanent Staff Jobs Urged at Arts Center

The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center’s caretakers have recommended that their temporary staff be made permanent.
The Ad Hoc Cultural Center Committee voted last week to name the acting administration staff--General Manager David Ralphe, Assistant General Manager Fred Helsel and Administrative Assistant Lynn Fanjeaud--as permanent overseers for the year-old arts center.
“We feel great,” Helsel said about the appointments, which have not yet been sealed with contracts. “We’re happy to be here, or we wouldn’t have stayed this long.”
The city spent close to $3 million to buy and renovate an old Methodist church into a 290-seat theater and art gallery. On Nov. 2, singer Shirley Jones is to perform a $100-a-seat anniversary concert to benefit the theater’s continued operations.
Other upcoming events include jazz performers Janet Caroll in November, the Ross Tompkins trio in January and clarinetist Abe Most in February. Comedy Tonight Productions is set to perform “The Pirates of Penzance” in January, and the Santa Paula Theater Center will produce the play “Bleacher Bums” beginning Nov. 8.
