California has long been considered the land of opportunity. When it comes to the rights of convicted felons, drunk drivers and uninsured motorists, some of California’s current laws make this all the more true (Oct. 9).
Prop. 213 would help stop abuses in our legal system by preventing lawbreakers from victimizing law-abiding citizens twice.
Prop. 213 prohibits convicted felons from suing governments, and hence taxpayers and others, for any damages if the criminal is accidentally injured while committing a crime or fleeing the scene of his or her crime. It will also prohibit people who drive drunk or without insurance--both of which are illegal--from suing law-abiding drivers for large, noneconomic damages commonly called “pain and suffering.”
