Rommel R. Corro; Journalist Jailed by Marcos

Rommel R. Corro, 51, a veteran Philippine journalist once imprisoned by Ferdinand Marcos. Corro was jailed in 1983 because of his coverage of the shooting of opposition leader Benigno S. Aquino. The assassination led to a lengthy uprising that ousted Marcos and replaced him with Aquino’s widow, Corazon, as president. Corro had served as editor and publisher of the now-defunct Philippine Times during the final years of the Marcos administration. Educated at Manila’s University of Santo Tomas, Corro began his career as a reporter at the Zamboanga Times and later worked in the Manila bureau of Associated Press. On Oct. 4 in Manila of colon cancer.
