MARYLAND : Booth Exhumation Rejected by Court
- Share via
John Wilkes Booth will remain firmly planted in Green Mount Cemetery, the Court of Special Appeals in Baltimore said in rejecting a request to dig up President Lincoln’s assassin. But the ruling is not likely to end the historical controversy over the grave, which, some claim, holds the body of another man. The controversy involves claims that Booth fled from federal troops after shooting Lincoln in Ford’s Theatre in Washington, April 14, 1865, and died many years later under an assumed name. Escape theorists insist that the man killed by a Union soldier on a Virginia farm April 26 was identified as Booth as a government cover-up of the escape.
