Middle School Plans Garden Laboratory

Cabrillo Middle School officials plan to turn a 3,000-square-foot ivy patch into an environmental learning garden and are seeking help from the community to make the project a success.
“We are turning an old ivy patch into an exciting outdoor environmental laboratory,” Principal Kris Bergstrom said.
The garden will provide opportunities for students to explore pond ecosystems, erosion, composting, weather recording and the spread of native plants.
“Traditionally students learned about these things through pictures,” Bergstrom said.
The garden, which Bergstrom expects to start using for science classes in the fall, will give students hands-on experience with environmental issues.
The school is seeking volunteers who can donate supplies and equipment, or who can contribute their expertise or time.
Cabrillo Middle School is at 1426 E. Santa Clara St., Ventura.
