Major Sets Date for N. Ireland Vote

LONDON — Prime Minister John Major set May 30 as the date for elections leading to peace talks in Northern Ireland, but his announcement Thursday drew fire from both pro-British Protestant unionists and the Irish Republican Army’s political arm, Sinn Fein.
Major defended the plan as fair and said no party would have an excuse to boycott the vote and cloud what he said is the best chance to bring peace to British-ruled Northern Ireland.
