Volunteers for senior programs gave 24,000 hours of service last year to encourage independence and self-sufficiency among the elderly in Huntington Beach, officials said.
The city and the Council on Aging recently honored 260 volunteers who gave 12,815 hours just to assist the frail elderly by taking meals to their homes, transporting them to medical appointments and shopping, and paying weekly visits.
Another 197 volunteers were cited for spending 11,000 hours in clubs and programs focused on keeping seniors physically, emotionally and socially involved at the city’s Michael E. Rodgers Seniors’ Center.
