Mesa Gets $265-Million Investment: Texas oilman Boone Pickens, who gained the reputation of a corporate raider in the 1980s, has repelled a hostile takeover attempt of his natural gas company. Pickens signed up investor and longtime friend Richard Rainwater for a $265-million infusion that will help Mesa Inc. refinance its debt and thereby satisfy the demands of shareholders who had threatened to take control of the company. The deal will leave Rainwater with securities that can be converted into 63.6% of Mesa’s common stock. Rainwater, head of Fort Worth-based Rainwater Inc., could own 70.6% of the Irving, Texas-based company after four years.
