SANTA ANA — In what police suspect was an attempted drug robbery, two gunmen burst into a home here Sunday and shot three men, killing one and seriously wounding two others.
Details of the shooting were sketchy, but Santa Ana Police Sgt. George Kopitch said preliminary reports indicate the gunmen were apparently attempting to rob the residents of drugs and money.
The shooting occurred at about 7:50 p.m. in the 4500 block of West 3rd Street.
The three victims were apparently new tenants who had recently moved into the house, Kopitch said. He added that police had no information that they were connected to drug dealing.
Kopitch said several shots were fired after a fight broke out between the residents and gunmen.
The two residents who survived the shooting received serious chest wounds. They were rushed to UCI Medical Center in Orange. Their injuries did not appear to be life threatening, Kopitch said.
The names of the three victims were not immediately available.
Kopitch said police were searching for the two gunmen who fled after the shooting.
