Houston Oiler kick returner Mel Gray was free on bond following his arrest after a fight with a police officer he is accused of grabbing.
Gray was charged with misdemeanor assault Thursday after police were called to investigate a disturbance at the Residence Inn in southwest Houston where Gray lives.
Gray, 34, and another man accused each other of pulling a gun, but officers did not find any weapon, police spokesman Joe Gamino said.
He said Gray then became involved in an altercation with police when a female officer asked him to remove his hands from his pockets.
“I don’t understand why she [the officer] got so hotheaded,” said Gray, denying that he touched the officer.
He was released from jail after posting $300 bail.
Gray suffered a bruised thigh in Sunday’s game against Denver and was expected to be sidelined for one to three weeks.
