Forbes’ Campaign Office Burglarized

NEW YORK — Police are investigating a break-in at the Manhattan headquarters of Republican presidential candidate Malcolm S. (Steve) Forbes Jr. in which computer disks appear to have been rifled, a Forbes aide said Sunday.
The door of the office had been smashed open. A fax machine was stolen, and a computer and printer were turned on. Computer disks apparently “had been gone through,” said spokeswoman Gretchen Morgenson.
But the campaign veered away from suggesting the Saturday morning burglary might be linked to a political motive.
Police said they had no suspects.
The millionaire publisher opened the office in the Hotel Pennsylvania about a week ago to organize his effort to gain more than 30,000 signatures to qualify for New York’s March 7 primary ballot.
The disks held names and addresses of people who will collect signatures, Morgenson said.
