PREP ROUNDUP : Santa Margarita Defeats Newport Harbor

Santa Margarita, ranked sixth in Orange County, defeated fifth-ranked Newport Harbor, 15-7, 13-15, 15-6, in a Sea View League girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at Santa Margarita High.

Michelle Chambers had 22 kills and Michelle Sarkees had 48 assists for Santa Margarita (14-1, 8-1 in league), which moved into a first-place tie with Newport Harbor (9-5, 8-1).

Jennifer Carey had 12 kills for the Sailors.

In the Arrowhead League:

Southern California Christian 3, Riverside Sherman Indian 0--SCC (15-0, 9-0) clinched at least a tie for the league championship--its first since 1986--with a 15-6, 16-14, 15-7 victory.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 3, Century 1--Cypress clinched its third league title in six years. Michelle Woimberghe had 16 kills for the Centurions (8-1 in league), who won, 13-15, 16-14, 15-9, 15-4.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 3, Buena Park 0--The Lancers (13-2, 9-0) clinched at least a tie for the league title with a 15-8, 15-1, 15-12 victory.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 3, Rancho Alamitos 0--Garden Grove clinched its first playoff berth in four years, defeating Rancho Alamitos, 15-4, 15-7, 15-5. Yesenia O’Campo had nine kills for the Argonauts (8-7, 7-5).

La Quinta 3, Bolsa Grande 2--Thyana Nugyen had 24 kills and Laurie O’Melia 19 for La Quinta (4-7, 4-9), which won, 13-15, 15-8, 3-15, 15-11, 15-11. Jill Tantardini had 14 kills for Bolsa Grande (11-5, 8-3).

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 3, Cerritos Valley Christian 0--April Harriman had 17 kills and Brethren Christian (5-10, 2-7) defeated Valley Christian, 15-11, 16-14, 16-14, for the first time in seven years.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 3, Western 1--Valencia clinched its seventh consecutive league title with its 15-2, 15-11, 14-16, 15-7 victory. Erin Dedic and Roxanna Stumps each had 12 kills for Valencia (9-4, 9-0).

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 3, San Clemente 0--Jami Bari had 29 kills and Erika Tillman added 17 kills and 16 digs to help seventh-ranked Dana Hills (9-6, 7-2) beat second-ranked San Clemente, 15-8, 15-13, 15-9.

Mater Dei 3, Capistrano Valley 0--Roberta Gehlke had 21 kills for third-ranked Mater Dei, which won, 15-5, 15-13, 15-13. The Monarchs (16-2, 7-2) are in a three-way tie for first with Dana Hills (9-6, 7-2) and San Clemente (12-3, 7-2).

In the Freeway League boys’ cross-country finals:

Sunny Hills wins--Ranen Bhattacharya paced first-place Sunny Hills in 15:36, one second ahead of teammate Louis Alvarez on the three-mile course at Craig Park. Buena Park’s Jarod Garritson took third in 15:52.

In the Freeway League girls’ cross-country finals:

Sunny Hills wins--Allyson Kulak finished second in 18:47 on the three-mile course at Craig Park for first-place Sunny Hills (46). Heather Garritson won the race in 17:42 for Buena Park, which finished third with 87 points.

In the Tournament of Champions field hockey semifinals:

Edison 2, La Verne Bonita 1--Zarah Antongorgi and Cheryl Helm each scored a goal for Edison (14-2-2).

Santiago 3, Marina 0--Camelia Rodriguez scored all three goals for Santiago (17-1-1), which will be host to Edison in the finals Thursday.

At the Orange League girls’ tennis finals:

Brea Olinda sweeps--Brea’s Amanda Manton defeated Western’s Debbie Jethva, 5-7, 7-5, 6-0, to win the singles’ title. Brea Olinda’s Kristin Schmachtenberg and Megan Walsh defeated teammates Brandi Chaney and Melanie Orchard, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to win the doubles’ title.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 16, La Habra 2--Pauline Lim swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, for Sunny Hills (12-6, 10-0).

In nonleague water polo:

Costa Mesa 15, Esperanza 11--The teams were tied, 10-10, after three quarters, but Robert Grayeli scored three of his five goals in the fourth quarter to help sixth-ranked Costa Mesa (17-4) pull away. Esperanza is ranked 10th in the county and fourth in Division II. Costa Mesa is top-ranked in Division II.

El Toro 7, San Clemente 4--Shane Lindstrom scored three goals to lead second-ranked El Toro (19-5) past fifth-ranked San Clemente.

Servite 16, Whittier La Serna 11--Jerry Smith scored seven goals for Servite (17-7), ranked seventh in the county and second in Division II.
