NEWPORT BEACH — Quarterback Nick Odenath returned to Orange Lutheran’s starting lineup and with Mike Crawford, Che Holloway and a dominating defense, the Lancers spoiled Calvary Chapel’s homecoming with a 35-21 Olympic League victory Saturday night at Newport Harbor High School.
Odenath, starting for the first time since separating his shoulder earlier this season, connected with Crawford for two touchdowns. He also completed five of nine passes for 111 yards, 104 of those in the first half.
Orange Lutheran (6-2, 3-0) rolled through the first quarter capitalizing on Calvary Chapel’s mistakes and putting on a near flawless offensive performance.
On the first possession for Calvary Chapel (3-5, 1-2), Ben Willits crushed Eagle quarterback Dan Murrieta, forcing a fumble on Calvary Chapel’s five-yard line. Lancer Greg Cook picked up the ball and ran it in for a 7-0 Orange Lutheran lead.
It took the Lancers only one play on their next possession as Odenath hit an open Crawford down the left sideline for a 35-yard touchdown with 5:08 left in the first quarter.
Orange Lutheran’s defense struck again as a Murrieta lateral was dropped and Mike Bollweg recovered and ran it in from 20 yards for a 21-0 Lancer lead.
Holloway then stepped up and put the game out of reach. He returned a Calvary Chapel (3-5, 1-2) punt 71 yards to the Eagle 22-yard line and followed that two plays later with a 22-yard touchdown run to give Orange Lutheran a 28-7 first-quarter lead. Holloway carried the ball 20 times for 133 yards.
Orange Lutheran scored the final touchdown with 11:53 left in the half as Odenath hit Crawford for again for another 35-yard touchdown pass.
