PREP WATER POLO ROUNDUP : El Dorado Edges Katella, Takes Control of Empire

John Jo scored on a breakaway in sudden death overtime to give El Dorado a 11-10 victory over Katella in an Empire League water polo match Wednesday at Katella.

El Dorado (16-7, 3-0 in league) moved alone into first place. Katella (13-7, 2-1) led, 6-3, at the half, but the Knights’ two-meter man and leading scorer Dave Shaddy was ejected early in the third quarter for a major foul.

El Dorado rallied and tied the score on a goal by Luke Byward with seven seconds left in regulation. Each team scored a goal in the first overtime period.

Kendall Benson and Jo each scored four goals and Nathan Fay had 12 saves for El Dorado. Scott Cutler had 19 saves for Katella.

In the Century League:

Canyon 20, Orange 4--Brad Schaeffer scored eight goals and Greg Cieszko added five for host Canyon (10-8, 2-1), which led, 6-2, at halftime but broke the game open by scoring eight goals in the third quarter.

Foothill 26, Santa Ana Valley 1--Brian Brown, with five goals, led top-ranked Foothill. Junior Jeremy Katz had four goals for the Knights (16-1, 3-0).

Villa Park 21, El Modena 2--Peter Cornue scored six goals and Brian Pharris added four for visiting Villa Park (19-2, 3-0). The Spartans, ranked second in the county and third in Division I, built a 14-0 halftime lead.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 15, Sunny Hills 9--Fullerton beat Sunny Hills in the sport for the first time in 36 years. Jeff Comstock, Steve Hieney and Jason Switzer each scored four goals for Fullerton (12-11, 1-2).

La Habra 18, Troy 3--Dave Ploog scored seven goals for host La Habra (13-10, 3-0), which led 11-2 at halftime. Josh Drysol scored three goals for La Habra.

Sonora 11, Buena Park 8--Jason Bollin scored four goals for visiting Sonora (2-1 in league). Eric Jones scored five goals for Buena Park.

In the Golden West League:

Saddleback 20, Ocean View 5--Sergio Gonzalez had six goals for host Saddleback (10-7, 2-1), which led 12-2 at halftime.

Servite 22, Westminster 7--Chris Hamme had seven goals and teammate Brett Dallas added five to lead seventh-ranked Servite (13-7, 3-0).

Tustin 20, Santa Ana 2--Ryan Hoff scored four goals for host Tustin.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 14, Western 5--Matt Flesher scored seven goals and Brent Reimer added four for visiting Brea (13-7, 3-0). Brea, ranked sixth in Division VI, broke open a close game by scoring six third-quarter goals to take an 11-2 lead.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 14, Santa Margarita 8--Shaun Souza had six goals for No. 4 El Toro (15-5, 3-0). Goalkeeper Steve Ferguson had 18 saves for Santa Margarita (1-2 in league).

Irvine 16, Woodbridge 10--Doug Tabbert scored five goals for Irvine (8-13, 2-1). Teammate Chris Vyn added four. Jim Siorokman scored four goals for Woodbridge (0-3 in league).

Newport Harbor 8, Corona del Mar 5--Chris Richardson and Mike Peetz each scored three goals for fifth-ranked Newport Harbor (13-4, 2-1). Corona del Mar (5-8, 1-2) scored its five goals with a man advantage. Sailor goalkeeper Graham Harvey had seven saves.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 11, Los Alamitos 7--Aaron Poole scored four goals to lead Esperanza (11-6, 3-0) over No. 10 Los Alamitos (10-9, 1-2). On defense for Esperanza, Kevin Griffith had three steals, Dave Slavich had two and Dan Allen had seven saves.

Fountain Valley 12, Edison 8--Randy Lempert scored six goals and Tim Causee added three for Fountain Valley (12-8, 2-1). Baron goalie Dave Garriott had 12 saves. Nick Phelps scored three goals for Edison (0-3 in league).

Marina 22, Huntington Beach 7--Senior Stever O’Rourke, with seven goals, was one of 10 players who scored for ninth-ranked Marina (17-5, 3-0). Robin Beauregard, who is among the top five scorers on the Vikings, scored three goals.
