Shawn Brass scored five touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter, to lead Sonora to a 32-20 victory over Garden Grove in a nonleague football game Friday at La Habra High.
Brass, a senior running back, rushed for 130 yards in 19 carries. He scored touchdowns on the three times he touched the ball in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Brass got the Raiders within one point, 20-19, with nine minutes 59 seconds left on a 14-yard run.
Following a mishandled snap by Garden Grove punter Eric Camarillo, Brass scored on the first play on an eight-yard run to give the Raiders the lead for good with 7:03 remaining.
“I feel Shawn is one of the best backs in Orange County,” Sonora Coach Mark Takkinen said. “He may not be the biggest back, nor is he the fastest back, but the heart inside Shawn makes him a winner.”
The Raiders (3-0) needed Brass’s help in the second half as Garden Grove took a 20-13 lead with 4:29 left in the third quarter, as Daniel Do bounced off several tacklers and ran 58 yards for a touchdown.
The Argonauts (0-3) scored with 7:35 left in the first half when Brian Jones returned a fumble by Brass 99 yards. They then took a 14-13 lead at halftime after Ruben Reyna scored on a five-yard run.
Despite turning the ball over five times, Sonora was the clear winner in total offense, outgaining Garden Grove, 495 to 191.
