ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : University Stops Woodbridge for Second Consecutive Shutout
- Share via
IRVINE — University High’s football team posted its second consecutive shutout, defeating Woodbridge, 17-0, Friday night in a nonleague game at Irvine High.
Jarrett Mahoney rushed for 110 yards in 16 carries to lead University (3-0).
Woodbridge (0-3) struggled offensively for the third consecutive game. The Warriors have not scored this season.
It looked like Woodbridge might spoil the shutout late in the game when it marched the ball to the University 15-yard line.
But University’s Bryant Geary intercepted a pass with five seconds left and returned the ball to midfield.
Geary also had an interception in the first half.
University took the early lead when Brett Lockwood hit a 39-yard field goal with 6:00 left in the first quarter.
University then scored on the final play of the first half.
On fourth and nine at the Woodbridge 34, sophomore quarterback Damian Defeo connected with Geary for a touchdown as time relapsed, giving University 10-0 lead at halftime.
University then moved ahead, 17-0, on a two-yard touchdown run by Mahoney with 5:29 remaining in third quarter. The touchdown culminated a nine play, 76-yard drive.
With the victory, the Trojans claim the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy, named in honor of the former Irvine youth football coach who died five years ago.
