Buried treasure in North County’s Tonner Canyon has long been the subject of speculation.
A 1938 story by H.T. Green in a local newspaper reported the legend: In 1775, a ship carrying Spanish gold was wrecked off the coast of Newport Beach. The crew carried some of the treasure to Tonner Canyon, where they buried it before being killed by pirates.
