PREP ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Overcomes Newport Harbor

Mater Dei, ranked second in Orange County, overcame six service errors and a loss in the fourth game before rallying to defeat third-ranked Newport Harbor, 15-9, 15-9, 9-15, 8-15, 15-1, in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at Newport Harbor.
Roberta Gehlke had 27 kills and Nicole Noya and Ami Orr had 11 each for the Monarchs (2-0).
Laura Wilson had 13 kills and four blocks and Joanna Fielder added 11 kills for the Sailors (1-1).
In other nonleague matches:
Corona del Mar 3, Calvary Chapel 2--Kelly Campbell had 23 kills for fifth-ranked Corona del Mar (1-1), which won, 14-16, 8-15, 15-11, 16-14, 15-9. Jenny Roberts had 24 kills for eighth-ranked Calvary Chapel (0-2).
Edison 3, Woodbridge 1--Kari Hogancamp had 15 kills for Edison, which won, 15-11, 15-5, 12-15, 15-7.
Fountain Valley 3, Cerritos Gahr 0--Melissa Plass had 15 kills and Carla Miali had 45 assists for Fountain Valley (1-1), which won, 15-5, 15-12, 15-9.
Huntington Beach 3, Dana Hills 0--The Oilers (3-0), ranked No. 1 in Orange County and the Southern Section Division I, won, 15-4, 15-8, 15-2. Jill Meyers had eight kills for Huntington Beach.
La Habra 3, Pico Rivera El Rancho 0--Kirsten Berg had 15 kills for La Habra (1-1), which won, 15-9, 15-9, 15-7.
Los Alamitos 3, Cypress 2--Laura Conlisk had 18 kills and Annie Sciborski added 14 for Los Alamitos (1-1), which won, 15-12, 6-15, 14-16, 16-14, 15-9.
Laguna Beach 3, Capistrano Valley 0--Carrie Zeller had 10 kills for seventh-ranked Laguna Beach (1-1), which defeated ninth-ranked Capistrano Valley, 15-4, 15-11, 15-5.
Sonora 3, Loara 0--Freshman Worthy Lien had 21 kills for Sonora (2-0), which won, 15-9, 15-3, 16-14.
Trabuco Hills 3, Laguna Hills 0--Whitney Uhl had 15 kills for Trabuco Hills (1-1), which won, 15-8, 15-10, 15-10.
In the Garden Grove League:
Bolsa Grande 3, Rancho Alamitos 1--Naomi Vito had 11 kills for Bolsa Grande (3-1, 1-0), which won, 9-15, 15-5, 15-6, 15-11.
Garden Grove 3, Santiago 0--Gina Huizar had nine kills for Garden Grove (2-2, 1-0), which won, 15-9, 15-7, 15-6.
In nonleague boys’ cross-country:
Brea Olinda wins--The Wildcats finished with 28 points to win a seven-way meet at Carbon Canyon Park. Chino Hills Ayala was second with 42 points. Ayala’s Sean Smith won the 5,000-meter race in 17:39 and Brea Olinda’s Michael Case finished second in 17:45. Ayala is ranked ninth in Division I.
In nonleague girls’ cross-country:
Chino Hills Ayala wins--Ayala, which had six runners finish in the top 10, had 17 points. Brea Olinda (5-2) finished second with 69 points, led by Michelle Richman’s 10th-place finish in 22:45 on Carbon Canyon’s three-mile course.
In Sunset League field hockey:
Santa Ana 3, Westminster 0--Liz Hernandez scored all three goals for Santa Ana (1-3).
In nonleague boys’ water polo:
Brea Olinda 14, Trabuco Hills 9--Matt Flesher scored six goals for Brea Olinda (1-1).
Foothill 22, Capistrano Valley 6--Brian Brown scored six goals and Rob Arroyo added five for Foothill (3-0), ranked No. 1 in Orange County and Division I.
Katella 19, Downey Warren 8--Dave Shaddy scored nine goals and Dave Rooks scored five of his six goals in the first quarter for Katella (5-2).
Long Beach Wilson 11, Los Alamitos 8--Wilson (2-0), ranked fifth in Division I, took a 4-1 lead in the first quarter and held off the Griffins, ranked sixth in Division II. Junior John Pearce scored six goals for Los Alamitos (5-2).
Servite 10, Marina 9--Jerry Smith scored his seventh goal with 4 minutes 24 seconds remaining to break a 9-9 tie. Eighth-ranked Servite led, 9-8, after three quarters, but Marina’s Steve O’Rourke scored the tying goal with 4:53 remaining.
Keith Haefner scored four goals for Marina (1-1), ranked ninth in the county.
