Coach: Sue Gardiner (second year).
1994: 15-2 overall, 10-0 in the Century League; lost to Los Alamitos, 12-6, in second round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.
Key returners: Katey Becker, No. 2 singles, first team all-league, So.; Faye DeVera, No. 1 singles, Times’ player of the year in 1994, Jr.; Shawna Lerer, No. 1 or No. 2 doubles, So.; Susan Shaw, No. 1 or No. 2 doubles.
Key newcomers: Anny Chien, No. 1 or No. 2 doubles, transfer from Loara, So.; Talline Kojian, No. 1 or No. 2 doubles, transfer from El Modena, Jr.
Outlook: The Spartans have an excellent chance to go undefeated in league again with DeVera and Becker back in singles and Shaw and Lerer returning in doubles. Depth was a problem against the top teams last year, but Gardiner said her team is so improved that two of her doubles players didn’t even make varsity. And if the match is close, Gardiner can usually count on three points from DeVera, who reached the section individual quarterfinals last year.
