Changes Needed in Teen Driving Rules

* Re: “Short Life and Slow Death in the Fast Lane” (Aug. 27):
Since you cannot force young people to be responsible bikers or drivers, why not take more measures to protect them against themselves.
First, do 16-year-old high school students really need a car?
Second, adopt measures that some states instituted resulting in a measurable drop in fatalities: A first-year driver can only drive with their own parent in the car; the second year they must have a licensed driver, older than themselves, escorting them. Also, immediate suspension of license if rules are broken or [there are] other such infractions [such as driving under the influence].
It’s worked for other states. Try it!

* Many teen-agers have died in automobile accidents in recent weeks. I think it has become obvious that many teen-agers do not possess the maturity that comes with owning a driver’s license.
These weren’t accidents in the true meaning of the word, but were a result of immaturity and irresponsibility of the drivers.
Driving is a privilege--not a right.
Am I the only one who believes the legal driving age should be 18 instead of 16?
