A Right Call on Tanker Shipments
* The U.S. Minerals Management Service fulfilled its name and did a service to local counties, the state of California and the nation when it decided last month to no longer oppose Exxon’s tanker shipments of crude oil off the coast.
The federal government studied the issue thoroughly and concluded that the company’s activity “presents minimal risk to the environment.” Still, groundless fears swirl around the issue.
It’s time for us to do what the federal government did: Look at the facts, not the myths. Pipelines have their limits, and right now those limits have been met. A safe alternative that is responsible from both an environmental and an economic standpoint must be found.
It has. It “presents minimal risk.” Let’s move on.
