The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to pay a mother and her brain-damaged child $790,000 for injuries the child suffered during birth at Los Angeles County King/Drew Medical Center.
The supervisors also agreed to pay $65,000 in Medi-Cal expenses and $6,283 to Long Beach Memorial Hospital for medical services rendered to Marina Vasquez’s child, Sirai Del Rio.
The brain damage Sirai suffered during birth on Nov. 25, 1991, has left her spastic and severely retarded, according to county officials.
Vasquez filed suit, claiming that county physicians had failed to recognize that Sirai exhibited signs of distress during birth.
