Westside : Feuer Leads Fight Against Jail Closure

Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Feuer is leading opposition to a plan to close the West Los Angeles Jail.
The Los Angeles Police Department is considering a move to shutter the facility, along with the 77th Street and North Hollywood jails, as part of an effort to streamline operations and cut costs. The closures would leave the LAPD with 10 remaining jails.
But Feuer last week asked city officials to delay the plans while seeking money to keep the facility open permanently.
“I agree with the [concept of] the jail consolidation process . . . but there are costs in closing this facility,” Feuer said.
The councilman said he was especially concerned that the move could hurt officer morale and lead to increased response times because patrols will have to travel farther to transport suspects to other jails.
“The time officers take going outside their service area could conceivably have an impact on their efforts to protect my constituents,” Feuer said.
