Workers Continue Newport Beach Cleanup

NEWPORT BEACH — Unknown bacteria-ridden debris kept a half-mile portion of beach closed Sunday as city and county health workers continued the cleanup.
The debris washed into rock outcroppings in the stretch of beach from 32nd to 48th streets, Newport Beach Fire Marshal Dennis Lockard said.
The beach was closed Saturday after a resident reported late Friday seeing a greasy white substance wash ashore. It was tested and found to have a high bacterial count. No illnesses were reported.
The contaminated sand was hauled away Saturday.
“We’re not certain yet what it is,” Lockard said.
The beach is expected to reopen today.
