Woodland Hills driver Nick Joanides is in stable condition at the Sherman Oaks Burn Center with third-degree burns on his hands after a five-car collision at Mesa Marin Speedway in Bakersfield.
During Saturday night’s Super Late Model feature race, Ray Hooper Jr. blew an engine. Hooper lost control of his car, which careened into one driven by Joe Bean, causing a chain reaction that involved three other cars.
Hooper and emergency crews pulled Joanides, who was trapped in his car, to safety.
Joanides was the most-seriously injured driver. All five cars involved in the accident were declared total losses.
