The City Council on Tuesday will consider a “Shop and Dine” program that would encourage residents to patronize local businesses and restaurants.
The $10,000 program proposal is aimed at promoting what San Juan Capistrano has to offer, with the hope of generating income for businesses and revenue for the city.
“What [the program] does is provide the message to buy local,” said Tom Facon, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.
The Mission San Juan Capistrano attracts about 400,000 visitors per year, but some residents and visitors are not aware of other things to do in San Juan Capistrano: dining at specialty restaurants, buying antiques or visiting other historical buildings.
“The main question we get from a lot of people who want to come to San Juan Capistrano is: ‘What else is there besides the mission?’ ” Facon said.
Mechelle Lawrence, an associate city planner, said the program would help show local residents what’s available. The program would not be aimed at tourists, Lawrence said, and would include a direct-mail campaign and shopping center promotions.
