Huntington Beach has raised more than $70,000 by selling library cards to people who don’t live in the city but use its central library and branch facilities.
The City Council last year imposed the $20-a-year library card fee for residents of other cities to offset the costs to provide services.
Since the fee became effective Oct. 1, more than 3,500 cards have been sold.
The fee has resulted in a 46% reduction, however, in book checkouts by people who live in other cities.
Of the revenue from card sales, 60% will go toward buying new books.
