The county will offer Southern Pacific Transportation Co. $8.5 million to purchase two rail lines, the transportation commission decided Friday.
The commission wants to purchase Southern Pacific’s Santa Paula rail line, with its terminus at or near Piru, and the Ventura line, located in the Saticoy area. A portion of the 42-mile rail corridor could be used for a biking and hiking trail.
The California Transportation Commission has allocated $3.5 million for the project, which county transportation officials are coordinating with the cities of Ventura, Santa Paula and Fillmore.
The purchase would also include adjacent commercial parcels in Fillmore and Santa Paula.
