Obituaries : * Betty L. Springgate; Former College Official

Betty L. Springgate, a Camarillo resident and former college administrator, died Thursday. She was 71.

Born in Paso Robles, Springgate worked for years in the Long Beach Unified School District. She later joined the fiscal affairs department of Long Beach City College, becoming the acting director for fiscal affairs before her retirement 12 years ago.

Springgate raised her two sons, Alvin L. of Santa Ana and Thomas of Camarillo, by herself after her husband, Alvin, died in 1948. Thomas Springgate said she worked hard to be both a mother and father, and later devoted her efforts to his children.

“Everything that she may have felt she couldn’t do for us because she had to work, she did with my kids,” he said.

In addition to her sons, she is survived by two grandchildren, brother William Manahan of Boise, Ida., and aunt Jackie Pierpointe of Windsor, Calif.
