Maximilian Franz Otto von Strobel, Anaheim’s first mayor, is considered “the father of Orange County.”
Strobel, who was born in Munich in 1826, moved to the United States in the early 1850s. After an adventurous life of exploring, including one of the expeditions of John Charles Fremont, Strobel settled in Anaheim in 1865. At the time, Anaheim and all of today’s Orange County was part of Los Angeles County.
In 1870, Strobel was elected mayor of Anaheim and began a crusade to form an independent Orange County. His efforts did not succeed, but the seed he planted later flourished, and in 1889, Orange became a separate county.
