Bay Meadows Jockey Out of Intensive Care

SAN MATEO — Jockey Marco Castaneda was moved out of the intensive care unit six days after sustaining a small brain hemorrhage from a race accident at Bay Meadows.

Castaneda, 44, was in stable condition Sunday at Mills Hospital. He was moved out of intensive care Saturday.

Castaneda was injured last Monday when his mount, Ballingarry Miss, broke down and threw him to the track. Three other jockeys were also injured.

Castaneda’s wife, Beverly, said her husband was tired, but able to talk.

“He’s doing better, but it’s going to take time. . . . a lot of time,” she said. “He still has some swelling of the brain.”
