Beschen Advances in Surfing Event

San Clemente’s Shane Beschen won his opening heat Friday, edging out Australian Simon Law and Hawaii’s David Kantrell to advance to the third round of the Pipe Masters surfing competition on the North Shore of Hawaii.
Top-seeded Kelly Slater of Cocoa Beach defeated surfing legend Gerry Lopez, and Rob Machado of Encinitas also advanced to the third round. The three scored impressive rides on the 10- to 12-foot waves, recording several backside tube rides.
