Two Area JC Ballplayers Sign With USF

Oxnard College third baseman Hernan Martinez and Pierce right-hander Jason Warren have signed to play baseball at the University of San Francisco, the school announced Wednesday.
They join Mission right-hander Ray Rivera among the area players signed by Coach Rich Hill, who took the USF job last spring after leaving Cal Lutheran.
Martinez, a Rio Mesa High graduate, hit .315 last spring and was All-Western State Conference. Warren, an Agoura graduate, was 6-4 last spring at Pierce.
Cross-Country
Sophomore Margarito Casillas of Arizona, the 1992 State Division I cross-country champion at Hoover High, will compete in the NCAA cross-country championships on Nov. 21 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Casillas placed 11th in the District VIII regional in Tucson on Saturday to help the Wildcats to victory.
Volleyball
Sylmar outside hitter Marya Ariza was named the player of the year in the East Valley League for the second straight season. Ariza, a 5-foot-4 senior, led the Spartans to the league title and the City Section 3-A final.
Basketball
Former Santa Clara High and UCLA guard Shon Tarver was one of four players waived by the Chicago Rockers of the Continental Basketball Assn.
Football
Running back Ken Morris is academically ineligible for Calabasas’ Division IX playoff opener at top-seeded Santa Ynez on Friday. Morris has 421 yards rushing and nine touchdowns.
Canyon High added tight end Rick Sweetnam to its varsity for Friday’s Division II playoff game against Peninsula.
