Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Trial Starts for Youth in Tourist’s Death

The trial of a teen-ager for the murder of a British tourist at a north Florida highway rest stop began with prosecutors saying they would not seek the death penalty. Instead, the state will seek a life prison term for John Crumitie, 17, the first of two youths to go on trial for the slaying of Gary Colley, a Yorkshire truck driver whose murder drew worldwide attention to Florida’s high crime rate. Colley, 34, was gunned down in September, 1993, during a botched robbery attempt 30 miles east of the state capital. The attack, which occurred as Colley and his girlfriend slept in their car, made Colley the 12th foreign tourist slain in Florida in as many months.
