COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCLA’s Phebus Falls to a Teammate in Tennis Final

UCLA’s Jane Chi defeated teammate Keri Phebus, 6-4, 6-4, for the title of the Rolex-ITA Southern California women’s tennis regional Sunday at UC Irvine.
Chi is the second-ranked collegiate player in the nation. Phebus, a Corona del Mar graduate, is ranked fifth.
In doubles, Chi and her sister, Stephanie, beat Phebus and Susie Starrett, when Phebus retired because of a sore back. The Chis led the match, 6-3, 3-2.
In the America West Challenge Cup men’s tennis tournament:
UCI’s Tontz loses in final--Chris Tontz, seeded second in the tournament, lost to top-seeded Paul Robinson of Texas Christian, 7-6, 7-5, in the first flight championship match in Houston.
Robinson is ranked 12th in the nation in singles; Tontz is 67th.
In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo tournament:
UC Irvine 7, Pacific 5--Peter Muller and Ryan Bailey each scored fourth-quarter goals to give the Anteaters (10-13) the victory in the seventh-place game at Long Beach Belmont Plaza.
Muller broke a 5-5 tie with an extra-man goal with 6 minutes 11 seconds left to play and Bailey scored with 37 seconds left.
Earlier Sunday, Muller scored four goals but UCLA beat Irvine, 12-9.
