TENNIS ROUNDUP : Healthy Sampras Wins First Tournament Since Wimbledon

Pete Sampras used his big serve to complete a perfect tune-up for the ATP Tour World Championships, beating Magnus Larsson, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, Sunday and retaining his $1.1 million European Community Championship title in Antwerp, Belgium.
The $3 million tour-ending event featuring the top eight players in the world begins Tuesday in Frankfurt, Germany.
Sampras, the world’s No. 1 player, won a record ninth tournament this season, his first since Wimbledon. He didn’t lose a set during the week and proved he is at his peak again after injuries slowed him this summer.

Anke Huber of Germany hung on to defeat Mary Pierce of France, 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, for the championship of the $750,000 Virginia Slims of Philadelphia. Huber nearly blew a 4-0 lead in the third set before she settled down for her third victory of the season.

Alexander Volkov of Russia won the $1.1 million Kremlin Cup tournament in Moscow, defeating Chuck Adams of the United States, 6-2, 6-4.

Alex Corretja of Spain won his first ATP Tour title, defeating Javier Frana of Argentina, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), in the final of the $313,000 Topper Open in Buenos Aires.

UCLA’s Jane Chi, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA, defeated teammate Keri Phebus, 6-4, 6-4, in the final of the Southern California Women’s Tennis Regional Tournament at UC Irvine.
