SYLMAR — Two men were killed Sunday when their car slammed into a fire hydrant and then struck a light pole, authorities said.
Three other men in the same car were critically injured in the 4:50 a.m. accident on San Fernando Road near Paddock Street in Sylmar, said Los Angeles Police Officer Gary Weller.
The driver, Jesus Martinez Cardenas, 21, of Sylmar was traveling south on San Fernando Road when he lost control of his Plymouth Colt, leveled a fire hydrant, then struck a pole, Weller said. Cardenas died at the scene.
One of his passengers, Jose Martinez Hernandez, 33, also of Sylmar was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he died, said a Los Angeles County coroner spokesman.
The three other passengers, all men in their 20s, were taken to local hospitals and are all listed in critical condition, he said.
Their identities were not released.
