API Says Alternate Fuels Get $1-Billion Federal Subsidy: A study by the American Petroleum Institute, the largest trade association of the U.S. oil and natural gas industry, says that total federal support for all alternative fuels and vehicles is currently running more than $1 billion a year. The study, released at API’s annual meeting held in Century City, lumps such direct support as research grants for improved electric batteries along with the less-direct financial effects of such federal requirements as those mandating increased use of cleaner-burning fuels by federal fleets.
