COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Long Beach City Wins Water Polo Title

Long Beach City’s Jaime Ramirez scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal with 2 minutes 54 seconds left to play, leading the Vikings to an 11-9 victory over Golden West in the finals of the Southern California water polo tournament Saturday at Long Beach Belmont Plaza.

The score was tied, 8-8, after the third quarter and was 9-9 with 4:24 remaining.

Jason Young scored three goals, John Chamin added two and Jason Stanton recorded eight saves for Golden West (27-3). Juan Martinez, George Hernandez and Ramirez each had three goals and Todd Putren added 10 saves for Long Beach City (23-4-1).

Citrus beat Cuesta, 14-11, in the third-place game.

In the championship of the Barstow men’s basketball tournament:

Cypress 70, Riverside 68--Matt Kenney scored what turned out to be the final points for Cypress on a three-pointer with 1:02 to go, giving Cypress a 70-64 lead.

Cypress then held off a late rally by Riverside, which fell short when Shawn White’s three-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the front of the rim.

Kennedy graduate Jeff Cummins, the tournament MVP, led the Chargers (3-0) with 25 points and nine rebounds.

In the Reno tournament:

Irvine Valley 113, Lassen 106--Keon Clark had 36 points and 22 rebounds and Brook Lister added 20 points to lead Irvine Valley (1-1) in the second round.

In nonconference:

Long Beach City 88, Golden West 67--Michael Dean scored 17 points and Rod Scheuerman added 14 points and seven rebounds for host Golden West (0-1). Mark Neal scored 16 points and Chris Blanton added 15 for Long Beach City (2-0).

In the Chaffey women’s basketball tournament:

Ventura 72, Golden West 70--Farrah Magee led Golden West (1-1) with 17 points in the semifinal game. Tari Anderson had 20 points, including two free throws with 22 seconds remaining, to lead Ventura.

Orange Coast 88, Moorpark 54--Jamie Shine, from El Modena High, scored 18 points and America Robledo, from Santiago High, added 16 for Orange Coast (1-1) in a consolation game.
