SANTA ANA — A veteran police officer was in stable condition at a local hospital Saturday night after he was hit on the head while frisking a suspected gang member in a local cafe, police said.
The officer and his partner were then involved in a scuffle with an unknown number of people in the bar, police said. The injured officer’s partner was not hurt.
The injured officer, whom police refused to identify, was struck on the head with either a stick or a bottle during a routine check for gang activity at Cafe L’Amour on 17th Street, said Sgt. Dick Faust.
The man who allegedly struck him was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.
