WORLD IN BRIEF : PERU : Rebels Bomb Targets in Lima for 2nd Day
- Share via
Guerrillas bombed targets in Lima for a second straight day, and the military said it killed 30 Shining Path rebels in the Andean highlands. Bombs exploded at two branch offices of the Banco de Credito, the country’s largest bank, causing damage but wounding no one, police said. Dynamite was thrown at the bank offices in the working-class districts of La Victoria and Brena. A day earlier, rebels set off a car bomb in front of an air force officers club, damaging a wall without causing injuries. Meanwhile, the military said 30 guerrillas were killed earlier in the week in a battle about 200 miles east of Lima. Three soldiers were killed and seven injured in the hourlong battle when troops on patrol encountered a column of about 100 rebels. President Alberto Fujimori has pledged to eliminate the Shining Path by the end of his term in July, 1995.
