NORTHRIDGE — Kevin Deal, a guard on the College of the Sequoias basketball team, accepted a scholarship offer from Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA early signing period.
Deal’s backcourt mate, former Kennedy High star Joe Wyatt, also is considering an offer from Northridge, Sequoias Coach John Boragno said.
Wyatt, who last season led Sequoias in scoring with a 16.3 average, “is leaning heavily” toward committing to the Matadors during the early signing period, according to Boragno. The signing period ends Nov. 16.
Wyatt, a two-time All-Valley selection by The Times, averaged 30.6 points for Kennedy as a senior in 1992-93.
Deal averaged 14.6 points, six rebounds and 4.3 points a game two years ago as a freshman. He used a redshirt season in 1993-94 after sustaining ligament damage to his left knee in a collision with an opponent near the end of the previous season.
