Longtime Dedication to Senior Center
Who: MaryAnn Malpas
Contribution: Recognized for more than a decade of volunteer service with the San Juan Capistrano Senior Nutrition Center. Malpas, 80, helps set up the center’s lunch program. She also bakes a cake each month to honor those celebrating birthdays. Malpas is also a volunteer at Mission San Juan Capistrano, where she prepares the Serra Chapel each day for 7 a.m. Mass.

WESTMINSTER
Municipal Workers Buoy United Way
Who: Westminster city employees
Contribution: City employees last year contributed more than $26,000 to United Way, doubling the previous year’s contributions. Carolyn Hunt, director of United Way Orange County, thanked the employees during a recent City Council meeting, saying that some neighboring cities with far more employees have contributed less. She said Huntington Beach contributed $17,000 and Garden Grove $11,000. This year’s campaign began Oct. 17 and will end Nov. 23.

IRVINE
Developer Gives Land for Low-Cost Housing
Who: The Irvine Co.
Contribution: Donated an acre of land in the Westpark II development to Habitat for Humanity, an organization that builds low-cost housing. Habitat for Humanity plans to build seven duplexes on the land, which will be bordered by a park and an elementary school. It is the first time the Irvine Co. has worked with the group to provide housing units for low-income families. The 14 units planned for the site will be sold at cost to families who earn no more than half of Orange County’s median income.

2 Libraries Request General Duties Help
Heritage and University Park libraries are seeking volunteers to shelve books, check in returned books, stamp due-date slips and help librarians perform general duties. At the Heritage Park Library, there is a need for volunteers who can work shifts of at least two hours on a regular basis. Arroyo Vista School Students Need Tutors
Arroyo Vista Elementary School is looking for parents and seniors who are interested in volunteering regularly as tutors for students with academic problems. Each volunteer would be paired with one student. The students need assistance in reading, mathematics and writing. If interested, call the school at (714) 459-0215.
