RAMS 27, DENVER BRONCOS 21 : Ram Review
First Quarter: Fans entering Anaheim Stadium Sunday were given Pro Bowl ballots and advised they were eligible to win a free trip to Honolulu for the game. Odds of winning were not specified, but even at one-in-million it beats Wayne Gandy’s chances of being there. . . . Chris Chandler, who replaced a groggy Chris Miller as starting quarterback, is on the Pro Bowl ballot. Miller isn’t. Huh? Ram PR spokesman said it was team’s decision to forward just Chandler’s name; that’s right, there was never any truth to those reports that Chuck Knox wanted Chandler as his starter the rest of the year. . . . Wide receiver Todd Kinchen leaves line of scrimmage early, gets penalized, comes back on next play for 43-yard reception. This is known as the Kancatch Redemption. . . . Weren’t they still playing baseball the last time Jerome Bettis scored a TD. . . . Chandler runs draw for 22 yards; Ground Chuck says, “That’s my guy.” . . . Rams 7, Broncos 0.
Second Quarter: Howard Griffith catches TD pass. He plays for the Rams. . . . Chris Chandler is outplaying John Elway. J.T. Snow hit better than Don Mattingly--for a month. . . . Bettis fumbles; one more and Howard gets the ball. . . . Denver has only 60 yards in offense--is Tommy Maddox stealing their signals? . . . Elway throws misguided pass, gets lucky because it hits Anthony Newman in his hands, falls incomplete. . . . Contestants for Punt, Pack & Move contest at halftime make their way to field. . . . Rams 17, Broncos 3.
Third Quarter: Chandler runs QB sneak, gets concussion, then throws 30-yard TD pass to Flipper Anderson. Claims later he knew what he was doing. . . . Elway now has Rams just where he wants them--up by 21 points. . . . Miller’s not sure where he is, but he goes in for a woozy Chandler. What does that tell you about Maddox? . . . George Foreman wins heavyweight championship at age 45; Gandy starts eating cheeseburgers. . . . Chandler has now thrown for 223 yards, making New Orleans’ linebacker Ernest Dixon Ram MVP for knocking Miller out. . . . Elway won’t have to worry about losing another Super Bowl this year. . . . Rams 24, Broncos 6.
Fourth Quarter: Wymon Henderson enters game, Broncos begin comeback. . . . Glyn Millburn is wide open, scores, must have been Wymon’s guy. . . . Derek Russell scores TD, must have been Wymon’s guy. . . . Shannon Sharpe catches two-point conversion and just where was Wymon? . . . Ram reverse sprung by Chandler block. Ground Chuck smiles, “That’s my guy.” . . . Bettis stopped three straight times at goal line, Drayton has tantrum, Knox has excuse to omit him from game plan next week. . . . Surprise, surprise, Elway throws to Wymon’s guy on fourth down, Wymon’s guy tries diving catch, can’t. So what did you expect? . . . Rams 27, Broncos 21.
Game Summary: St. Louis, Baltimore, Oakland? Rams (4-5) versus Raiders (4-5). Loser leaves town.
