Minor Parties Deserve Fair Share of Attention

In your story on the election for the 38th Assembly District (Oct. 25), you allowed just one sentence to Charlie Wilkin, the Green Party candidate. There was no photograph of him, and his views were not solicited.
Ignoring minor party candidates does no service to a democracy. Citizens rely on the Los Angeles Times to be informed in their choices, which in fact are not limited to the two major parties. The existence of other parties and the views of candidates representing them must be made known to the electorate. By refusing to publicize them, you impose a form of censorship. This is especially injurious to minor parties such as the Green Party, which do not have the resources of major parties and must rely on public media for publicity.
Charlie Wilkin is a high school teacher who has devoted many extra hours to the enrichment of his students through special trips and programs. He has long been active in political and environmental projects in the Valley and is well acquainted with its needs. He would be a splendid representative of his district.
In any case, his candidacy deserves fair and full reporting.
