PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Third-Quarter Score Lifts Coyotes Past Lancers

In a tight defensive game, Buena Park held on in the closing minutes to record a 10-7 Freeway League victory over Sunny Hills Friday night at Buena Park High School.

The Coyotes (2-6, 1-2) used a 79-yard touchdown pass and an interception by Jonathan Fagins that set up the go-ahead field goal to steal the game from the Lancers. Quarterback David Barrios led the struggling Coyotes with 52 yards rushing and 106 yards passing.

With 4 minutes 53 seconds left in the first half, the Lancers (2-6, 1-2) got a break when a roughing-the-kicker penalty gave them the ball at the Coyote nine-yard line. Two Greg Garand runs later, the Lancers led, 7-0. Garand had 41 yards rushing and 113 yards passing for Sunny Hills.

In the second half, the Coyotes got the big plays they needed to take the lead. On its first possession of the half, the Coyotes drove 63 yards on eight plays, one of them a dropped pass in the end zone. The Coyotes settled for a Jude Reyes’ 20-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

With 2:34 left in the third quarter, Buena Park began a drive at its own 20-yard line after a Lancer missed field goal. After a one-yard Barrios run, he rolled left and found Corey Lyday behind his defender on the side line. Barrios had just enough on the pass to beat the defender, and Lyday outran the safety for a 79-yard play and the go-ahead touchdown.
