IRVINE — Jarrett Mahoney’s 35-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter helped University defeat Estancia, 20-0, in a Pacific Coast League opener Thursday night at Irvine High.
Mahoney carried only four times, rushing for 39 yards for University (3-3, 1-0). Estancia (3-3, 0-1) was led by Karlo Amaya, who rushed for 77 yards in 11 carries.
It looked as if Estancia would tie the score when Amaya raced for 45 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter.
But touchdown was negated when the Eagles were called for clipping. The drive ended when University’s Ray Davis tackled quarterback Frough Jahid for a 10-yard loss at the Trojans’ 36-yard line.
University broke open the game when Tucker Highfield scored from one yard with 7:48 remaining in the game. The kick failed.
Highfield was the game’s leading rusher with 105 yards in 13 carries.
University’s defense accounted for the other score. Cornerback Bryant Geary intercepted a pass by backup quarterback Jack Clark and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown to put the Trojans ahead, 20-0, with 15 seconds remaining.
University’s quarterback Alan Price attempted only three passes, completing one for seven yards.
Jahid completed five of 15 passes for 65 yards for Estancia.
